With
over 350 islands, many bays, and rugged cliffs, there's
plenty of great fishing structure on Lake Vermilion.
Not only is this an outstanding fishing lake located
in Northern Minnesota but it is also a very beautiful
and picturesque lake. Lake Vermilion covers 76 square
miles, is 27 miles long and is split into several big
and little bays. Van Ryper Bay is full of cabbage which
gets heavier as the season progresses and you'll be
able to work the borders with bucktails for some nice
catches. Fox Bay is another great area to fish for Muskie.
In summer, the Muskie activity switch to the reefs,
bars, and rock humps where the fishing is typically
very productive. Walleye fishing on Lake Vermilion can
be excellent through the year and it starts in springtime
in the sheltered bays. Trolling with spinnerbaits, Rapalas
or jig/minnow combinations along the weedlines that
are appearing will produce some fine catches. Walleyes
start going to the deeper water in June from the bays
and head for points, reefs and islands. For Northern
Pike fishing on Lake Vermilion you should check Sunset
Bay in the springtime as the pike use Sunset Creek as
a spawning place. Largemouth Bass inhabit a number of
the weedy sections of Lake Vermilion in the rear bays
and they can be caught in large numbers and sizes throughout
the summer.
